History / Intro

John Joe Moran (Brian's uncle) left us the home house when he died a few years ago (21/4/2011).  Our plan is to renovate the old cottage and put the thatch back on and build an extension at the back.  Scroll down to see the plans.

Links to videos of an old thatch cottages - we are hoping the front will look something like this.

This house was where Brian's father Martin, was born.  Ten children were reared in this house. Sadly, Martin (Brian's dad) died in 24/1/2009. Annie and Michael died in their forties.  When I started this blog in February there were six remaining members of  the family are Maureen, Eileen, Delia, Rita, Kathleen and Patrick.  Tragically, Kathleen, the youngest of the family died very suddenly on Good Friday in March. She will, along with Mattie and John Joe be sadly missed in Lackaghbeg.   Mattie went to London in 1958 and met Brian's Mum Eileen there, lived there for 40 years and reared their family in Kilburn.  Myself and Brian moved to Galway in 1998 and Mattie, Eileen and Andrew in 1999.  Eileen is from Annascaul, Co. Kerry, the home of Tom Crean. I'm from Skreen in Co. Sligo.

I am happy to put up any history/old stories that the family has up here :)

Location

The house itself is over 200 years old (circa 1850), we know that because of the histroic map below and the date of 14th August 1899 is carved into the fireplace and John Joe told us that the fire place was built years after the family moved into the house.

The New Build - Feb 2018

Brian started renovations on John Joe's this week. We are going doing up the old house and rethatching the old house, leaving the kitchen where it is but extending it into JJ's old bedroom and then building a new sitting room and bedrooms out the back as a new build.

Arial view of the house, the old house and barn to the front and the new build and garage to the back. We also have to break in a new entrance towards the river side of the house, or as the Lackaghbeggers say, up the lane towards the river, the rest of us say, down the lane!!

New Plans, old house to the front and then the extension at the back with 2 bedrooms upstairs.
The thatch is going back on the old house.
